완전한 것들의 틈_The Gap Within The Whole

광주미디어아트플랫폼(이하 G.MAP)은 2026년 5·18민주화운동 기념 전시로 《완전한 것들의 틈》을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 5·18민주화운동의 정신을 현대적 관점에서 새롭게 해석할 수 있는 자리가 되고자 마련했다. 이를 위해 동시대 작가들의 작품에서 현대 사회, 과거와 현재까지 역사 중 한 지점을 포착하고 거기서 경험했거나 관철하고자 하는 바를 보여준다. ‘완전한 것들의 틈’은 고정불변하거나 대체할 수 없을 것으로 보였던 완전한 것이나-또는 그렇게 보이는 체계 속에서 예술가의 예리한 시선으로 포착해 낸 미세한 균열을 의미한다. 동시대 작가들은 사회의 일원으로서 자신이 속한 시스템과 체제에 영향을 받으며 살아간다. 이들이 역사 속의 한 지점이나 현대 사회에서 직접 경험과 관찰한 바를 작품에 투영한 것이 이번 전시의 시작점이다. 특히 광주광역시는 5·18민주화운동의 발원지로, 이를 통해 우리나라 현대사의 전환점이 되었던 곳이다. 5월 광주의 현장과 기록은 많은 예술인들에게 현실을 다시 바라보고, 목소리를 낼 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 전시는 5월 정신과 마찬가지로, 현실을 자각하고 변화를 일으키거나 새로움을 끌어내고자 했던 정신성을 구심점 삼아 이것이 동시대 미술로 어떻게 보일 수 있는지 탐구한다. 역사적 아픔, 문화적 차별, 국제 사회 속 충돌, 새로움에 대한 도전과 갈망 등 여전히 해결할 숙제가 산적된 현실 이면을 끄집어내는 작품을 소개하여 미술이 제도적 답습만이 아니라 현실에 대한 재인식을 도와줄 전환점이 될 수 있다는 것을 시사한다. Gwangju Media Art Platform (hereafter G.MAP) presents The Gap Within The Whole as its 2026 commemorative exhibition for the May 18 Gwangju Democracy Movement. This exhibition has been organized as an opportunity to reinterpret the spirit of the May 18 Gwangju Democracy Movement from a contemporary perspective. To this end, it brings together works by contemporary artists that capture pivotal moments in history—past and present—and reveal what was experienced, endured, or pursued at those moments. This exhibition, The Gap Within The Whole, seeks to reveal the fissures perceived through the sharp gaze of artists within systems that appear fixed, complete, or irreplaceable. These fissures emerge because artists themselves live as members of society and are inevitably shaped by the systems and structures to which they belong. Their works begin by reflecting what they have experienced or come to understand. In particular, Gwangju, as the birthplace of the May 18 Gwangju Democracy Movement, was a pivotal site in the transformation of modern Korean history.
