CHUNG Miok’s work begins with the familiar order of geometric form. Drawing on visual languages accumulated throughout art history—including geometric abstraction, the repetition of Minimal Art, and the optical effects of Op Art—the artist rearranges and combines these elements in new ways. Lines and planes, repeated through variations in color, angle, and spatial layering, do not remain within a fixed structure but continually form new relationships, transforming the order of the pictorial surface. Through this process of reconstruction, geometric forms overlap, shift, and appear to move, creating illusions of depth and movement that seem to extend beyond the actual space of the work. As the viewer’s gaze moves across the surface, forms appear to change and space seems to expand, turning the act of looking into a process of visual exploration and discovery. For Miok, “illusion” and “play” are important elements through which the rigidity of geometry is unsettled and transformed into a sensory experience.
